GENESIS
Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University located amidst rural surroundings is conducive for calm study, research and quiet contemplation.  It is a major department in the Faulty of Agriculture and is a vital limb in rural development, bridging science and technology in the fields of agriculture and bio-energy.

It had its inception as division of Agronomy with the starting of B.Sc.(Ag.) Degree programme in the year 1958.    It was   upgraded   into   department   in the year 1980. A renowned Agronomist, Prof. AR.Lakshmanan, was the first Head of the department.  His tenure of office was the turning point of the Department when it received national and international recognition as a leading weed management and bio-energy research unit.  He was also in the helm of affairs of the Faculty of Agriculture as the third Dean from 1981 to 1986.  Prof.Rm.Alagappan, a renowned Scientist in Soil and Irrigation Management succeeded Prof. AR.Lakshmanan in July 1989.  Since 1992, the department is under the stewardship of Dr. G. Kuppuswamy, Crop Scientist and Biogas Expert and present Dean of Faculty of Agriculture.

At early stages, the department was staffed by a small group of enthusiastic Agronomists and Weed Management Specialists. Notable persons like Dr. K. Shiva Shankar, former Lecturer in Agronomy, Prof. Rm.Alagappan, former Head of the department, Dr. P.Panneerselvam, Professor of Agronomy (Retd.), Mr.E.Thiruvarasan, former Reader in Agronomy and  Dr.G. Kuppuswamy, present Head of the department and Dean of Faculty of Agriculture nurtured the department with all dedication.

The present devoted senior faculty, Dr. K. Wahab, Dr. RM. Kathiresan, Dr. K. Thanunathan, Dr. V. Vaiyapuri, Dr. M. Ganpathy, Dr. S. Natarajan, Dr. V. Imayavaramban, Dr. A. Sundari and Dr. R. Raman, Professors and Dr. D. Kalyanasundaram, Reader along with young and energetic lecturers are striving hard to make the department attain par excellence in academic and research activities.

The post-graduate program in M.Sc.(Ag.) Agronomy was commenced in the year 1978-79.  With this, the emergence of a strong research-base in Agronomy was inevitable.  The department has so far produced 296 post- graduates including 42 Ph.Ds who have been mainly drawn from backward and scheduled classes in the villages.  As one of the major departments of the Faculty of Agriculture, it has contributed significantly in producing 5,250 agricultural graduates since its inception.  Besides, technical manpower is provided to the Government of Tamil Nadu, Government of India, Nationalised banks, agro-industries and corporate sectors.
