GENESIS
   The full-fledged Department of Agricultural Economics was established in 1993 which had its beginning as Division of Agricultural Economics in 1987 headed by Dr.P.Zeaudeen with an aim to develop a strong programme  in agricultural and rural development with emphasis on  teaching, research and extension. Since 2004 the Department is headed by  Dr. K.R.Sundaravaradarajan.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

All the staff members of the department are actively involved in extension activities .

  • The department has wide outreach with agro industrial units and actively associates with them for implementing the Entrepreneurship Development Programme  targeted on farmers and SHG members.
  • The department actively participates in the “Farmers day” which is organized every year in the Faculty of Agriculture.  An exhibition is arranged during farmers’ day with the various agro industrial products. 
  • The department organised an unique Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP) for 10 days on “Establishment of Agri Business Management (ABM) Centre” to 25 unemployed agricultural graduates funded by Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, Chennai.
  • The department organised seven numbers of trainings for farmers and SHGs on “Production and Marketing of Stevia under Contract Farming System”. Totally 305 farmers and 130 SHGs members from various districts of Tamil Nadu directly got benefited by participating in the trainings.
  • In addition the members of the department regularly contribute to the vernacular newspapers on various aspects of agricultural economics. 
  • The department has close association with local NGOs in executing the extension works related to agricultural and rural development.
  • The department delivers special lectures in various forums related to agricultural and rural development.
  • The department promoted five herbal SHGs and five water conservation network groups in the near by rural areas.
