| GENESIS |
|
| The Department of Agricultural Extension of the Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University came into existence as a Division of Agricultural Extension 40 years ago. Initially, Agricultural Extension has been taught as one of the subjects for the B.Sc. (Ag.) students and it has been extended to B.Sc (Horti) in 1996. The Division was upgraded as Department of Agricultural Extension in July, 1994. |
| When it was a Division, it was headed by Prof. S. V. Pandurangan (upto June, 1987) succeeded by Sri. E. Thiruvarasan (July – December, 1987) and Dr. J. Vasanthakumar (December, 1987 – June, 1994). After becoming as a Department, Dr.J.Vasanthakumar is the Professor and Head since July, 1994 to till date. |
The Department has a strength of 25 teaching staff members with 5 Professors, 2 Readers and 18 Lecturers. Out of them 13 members are having Ph.D degrees. |
| The Ph.D and M.Sc. (Ag.) study programmes in Agricultural Extension were started in the academic years 1988-1989 and 1992-1993, respectively. |
| The Department has been offering Agricultural Extension courses to B.Sc. (Ag.) and B.Sc (Horti) students. It also offers M.Sc (Ag.) programme and Ph.D in Agricultural Extension. |
| Instructional Technology in Extension Education, Entrepreneurship Development, Visual Communication, Journalism, Human Resource Management and Computer Programming and its Applications are the optional subjects offered along with the core subjects at the Post- graduate level. |
| RESEARCH |
|
i) Ph.D: The Department has so far produced 17 Ph.Ds. Out of which two scholars were full – time students, 7 were part-time candidates , 8 members were studied under external registration from other institutes like State Agricultural Universities ( 4 candidates) and ICAR institutes (4 candidates). |
| At present, 18 candidates are undergoing Ph.D programme. Out of which, one candidate is a full – time student, 14 are part-time candidates and three members are doing under external registration from other institutes like State Department of Agriculture (2 candidates) and ICAR institute (1 candidate). |
| The scholars are given research topics pertinent to the regional and national importance covering Agricultural Extension, Agricultural communication, Human Resource Development, Gender studies, Training, Adoption and Indigenous Technical Knowledge. |
ii) M.Sc. (Ag.): Totally, 102 Post-graduates have been produced by this Department till date and 8 more students are undergoing their M.Sc.(Ag.) programme. The students have been guided to take up research in the areas of Administration, Adoption Studies, Communication, Entrepreneurship, Gender Studies, Human Resource Management, Indigenous Knowledge System, Management, Marketing behaviour, Media Studies, Rural Development, Sustainability and Training. |
iii) Thrust areas of the completed projects: The research projects which were completed by this Department concentrated on thrust areas such as:
1) Implications of environmental and sustainability issues for organization and practice of agricultural extension
2) Participatory technology development and indigenous technical knowledge in sugarcane development
3) Village adoption for agricultural development
4) Role of farm women in diffusion and adoption of eco-friendly technology
5) Training needs of farm women in eco-friendly technologies |

| WORKSHOP |
The Department of Agricultural Extension organized an Indo-British Workshop on Extension for Sustainable Agriculture which was funded by the ODA, UK in January, 1996. |
| SPECIAL LECTURES |
| The staff members from the Department of Agricultural Extension are regularly delivering special lectures at the State and National level Institutes for different extension functionaries. They also deliver some special lectures for the farming community during the Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) Programme organized for the Final year Under-graduate students. |
| GUEST LECTURES: |
| The staff members from the Department of Agricultural Extension deliver guest lectures in the form of lead papers in International, National and State level seminars and conferences very often. They also deliver some guest lectures for the NSS students, students of other Faculties of the Annamalai University for their academic pursuit. |
| REFRESHER COURSES |
| The Department of Agricultural Extension has organized an UGC sponsored Refresher Course in Extension Education during November 3 – 23, 2004 at the Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University. |

| OTHER ACTIVITIES |
- The Department of Agricultural Extension organizes Farmers’ Day every year. Around 500 farmers from the Cuddalore , Nagapattinam and neighbouring Districts are being benefited. They are exposed to different Agricultural and Horticultural Technologies through demonstrations, exhibitions and discussions. Some important farm inputs are also distributed to the farmers during the programme.
- The Department has been publishing a quarterly farm magazine called Velaan Kathir for the benefit of the farmers, extension workers and students since January 2000 and 34 issues have been published so far.
- The Department of Agricultural Extension is organizing Village Stay Programme under Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) for the IV B.Sc. (Ag.) / (Hort.) students in the villages of Cuddalore and Nagapattinam Districts.
- A training programme on Participatory Rural Action to Remedy Problem Soil Situation was organized for the Cane Officers of the M.R.K. Co-operative Sugar Mills Ltd., Sethiathope in 2003.
- The Department has conducted Skill Training on Floriculture for the women SHGs in 2003.
- The Department also conducted a Management Training Programme for Sales Representatives of the SHGs in collaboration with the District Rural Development Agency, Cuddalore and Vridachalam Panchayat Uniion in 2004.
- A training programme on Value Added Products of Coconut was organized in collaboration with the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (ICAR), Kasaragod, Kerala in 2004.
- Every year, farmers from the Union Territory of Puducherry are brought to the Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University by the Farmers Training Centre, Puducherry for visit. Field Trips are arranged by the Department of Agricultural Extension during their visit. So far more than 1000 farmers of the Puducherry were benefited.

| DEPARTMENT LIBRARY |
The Department is having a very good library with research journals of National and International importance. It is having a wide range of collection of text books, reprints, popular magazines of both National and International, Educational CDs and books for competitive examinations. The library is also having internet browsing facility which is highly useful for the scholars of this Department not only for their research purposes but also for higher studies and employment opportunities abroad. |

| EQUIPMENT-LABORATORIES |
The Department is having a well equipped Audio-visual Laboratory for the Under-graduate and Post-graduate students. The laboratory is having Audio-visual aids like Automatic and manual Slide Projectors, OHPs, Direct Projector, 29” Television, LCD, VHS camera, Digital camera, Display screen, Flannel board, Audio and video cassettes, Charts, Flip boards, CD ROMs and internet facility. |
