Prof. V. Murugesan completed B.Sc (1971) from St.Joseph’s College, Tiruchirapalli and obtained his M.Sc, (1973) in Chemistry from Loyola College, affiliated to the University of Madras. He obtained his pre-doctoral degree (M.Phil. 1980) from University of Madras and Ph.D.(1989) from Anna University. Prof. Murugesan was a researcher at the University of Pittsburgh, USA during 1992-93. He worked as Demonstrator, Associate Lecturer, Lecturer, and Assistant Professor at Anna University from the year 1973 and he was appointed as a full Professor in the year 1996. He thus has over 40 years of teaching experience and more than 30 years of research experience. He served as the Head of the Department of Chemistry, Anna University for seven years. During his tenure as Head, he mobilized grants from both Central and State Governments to equip the Department with state-of-the-art facilities for research, consultancy and testing. The Department has acquired many sophisticated equipment during his stewardship with financial support from DST-FIST, UGC-SAP and the Tamil Nadu Government. The tenure of Prof. Murugesan as Dean (Chairman), Faculty of Science and Humanities has seen changes such as the revision of syllabi and curriculum for Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate studies, towards the overall improvement of academic standards.
His major research interests include porous catalytic materials for fine chemical synthesis, semiconductor photocatalytic mesoporous and nanostructured materials for pollution abatement and physical organic chemistry. Under the supervision of Prof. Murugesan, 35 scholars have completed their Ph.D. degree and over 100 students did their Masters and M.Phil. theses. Prof. Murugesan has published more than 220 research articles in SCI journals. His outstanding research work and publications in journals of repute in the field of porous materials, Environmental Chemistry and Environmental Engineering have been cited by several researchers all over the world. He thus has very good citation metrics and his present Scopus h-index is 46. He has been awarded the Thomson Reuters India citation award 2012 for Research Excellence and high citations for his research articles.
He has established excellent research links with Universities and Institutes within India and also established International research collaboration in Japan, Germany, Italy, Korea, Taiwan, Australia and Russia, while he was working in Anna University. His International standing as a Scientist is evidenced by his publication record and extensive collaborations with overseas scientists. Prof. Murugesan has travelled widely across the globe in connection with participation in International Conferences and as visiting Scientist under exchange programmes. He has carved a niche for himself as an International Scientist. Prof.Murugesan has also been awarded the prestigious STA and JSPS Fellowships of Japan. Prof. Murugesan received one time research grant from UGC and was awarded the UGC-BSR Emeritus Fellow. In recognition of his phenomenal and significant contribution to porous materials, the journal ‘Advanced Porous Materials’ published a special volume commemorating his 65th birthday. He served as an expert on statutory bodies such as UGC, AICTE, DST, CSIR, TNSC&ST and Science City. He has completed many funded research projects from various agencies and has organized National and International Conferences.
Prof. Murugesan is on the editorial board of and is a reviewer for several prestigious international journals. He is a member in many Professional bodies both within the country and abroad. He is serving as a member in academic bodies of many Universities in the Country. Prof. Murugesan, as Director, Centre for Research, Anna University for four years, has brought in major and radical changes in order to benefit the research scholars and supervisors of Anna University. He has made it mandatory for scholars to publish at least one paper in journals with impact factor which not only benefited the students but also the university in general. After his retirement, he worked for a brief period as Professor of Eminence and Advisor, Centre for Research, Anna University. Later, he served as Registrar and Director, Sponsored Research & Consultancy, B.S.Abdur Rahman Crescent University, Chennai for five years.
His flair for teaching students at all levels was well utilized by Anna University, which made him an Executive Member of the Governing Council of the Higher Secondary School started by Anna University in the campus in collaboration with industry. He was later the Secretary of this school for more than ten years, during which the school witnessed rapid progress in the improvement of infrastructural facilities. He was also the chairperson for the revision of Tamil Nadu State Higher Secondary School syllabus in the year 2011 and served as the reviewer of 11th and 12th standard Chemistry text books.
