       This is our immense pleasure to invite you all to attend the International Conference on Diabetes mellitus and Cancer organised by the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology during 14th - 16th December 2012. Diabetes mellitus, a leading metabolic syndome worldwide, has significant impact on health, quality of life and life expectancy of patients. Reasons for tremendous increase in the number of diabetic patients in India include increasing number of ageing population, sedentary life style and physical inactivity. Cancer is the major health problem worldwide and is one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in children and adults. The incidence and death rate due to cancer in India will rise by the factor of 3 between the years 1991 and 2025 simply as a function of ageing and life style modifications.

       Medicinal plants and their active constituents play an important role in the prevention and ailment of several diseases including diabetes and cancer. India is rich source of traditional medicine which is plant based. A vast majority of Indians living in villages and tribal areas depend largely on medicinal plants and herbs for their health care needs. This conference will provide a forum for discussing the role of natural products and their bioactive constituents in the prevention of cancer and diabetes.

       A large number of experts from different areas of Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Cytogenetics and Bioinformatics are expected to deliver the lecture in the conference. About the Host University

       The Annamalai University was founded by the benefaction, philanthropy and far-sighted vision of Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad. As Pro-Chancellor for nineteen years, he devoted all his loving care and attention to the growth and development of the University. After his passing away in 1948, his eldest son, Dr. Rajah Sir M.A. Muthiah Chettiar, became the second Pro-Chancellor.  He emulated his illustrious father in addressing himself to the ever-expanding and dynamic needs of the University, in keeping with the knowledge explosion of the times. Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy succeeded his father in August 1984. Equipped with the advantages of the wherewithal, acquired from his father as well as the grandfather, and enriched by his own astute insights gained as a result of his many splendoured personalities he steers the University with the same care and commitment of his illustrious forbears.

       During the eighty-three years of its meritorious progress, the Annamalai University has passed through significant milestones. It celebrated the Silver Jubilee in 1955, the Golden Jubilee in 1979, the Diamond Jubilee in 1989, and the Platinum Jubilee in 2004. All these years, the University has been avidly seeking “fresh woods and pastures new,” by reaching new heights of excellence and innovation in academic pursuit, enquiry and research. It has at the time of its inception, only seven Departments of Studies, but now has forty-eight Departments under the Faculties of Arts, Science, Indian Languages, Engineering and Technology, Education, Fine Arts, Agriculture, Medicine and Dentistry, respectively.

       The Department of Biochemistry in Annamalai University was started in the year 1994. Since then department has made rapid strides in both teaching and research activities. The department runs 2-year M.Sc. Biochemistry and 2-year M.Sc. Biotechnology (2009 onwards), and 5-year Integrated M.Sc. Biotechnology (2002 onwards) courses in addition to M.Phil & Ph.D programmes. The major areas of research in the department include cancer chemoprevention, molecular oncology, diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, hepatotoxicity, chronooncology and chronobiology. The members of the teaching staff have earned academic distinctions and awards and have received research grants from several national as well as international funding agencies.  The department has signed memoranda of understanding with Johns Hopkins University, USA and National University of Singapore, Singapore and Mitsui Norin Co. Ltd., Japan.  It has also exchange programme with the University of Connecticut medical centre USA. Taking into consideration its all around progress the Department of Science and Technology recognized the Department for FIST funding. The UGC also, appreciating its contribution and growth, sanctioned the Department Special assistance programme.

Symposium mainly focus on

  • Recent trends in diabetes mellitus and cancer
  • Molecular and biochemical markers of diabetes mellitus and   cancer
  • Preventive strategies for diabetes mellitus and cancer
  • Role of free radicals and antioxidants in diabetes   mellitus and cancer

Call for papers:

       Research papers of original contribution are invited for oral presentation in the conference.

Paper submission:

       Authors are invited to send the soft copy of the abstract of their research work not exceeding 200 words in MS-word format. Soft copy should be sent to diacan@rediffmail.com. The abstract should have title, authors’ name and affiliations, full address for corresponding including fax, phone/mobile and e-mail.

Certificate of Merit:

       The young budding scientists will be honored with appreciation certificate for his/her best oral presentations.

       Last date for submission of abstract       : 20.11.2012
       Last date for registration                       : 30.11.2012

Registration:

       Delegates are requested to send their registration fee as Demand Draft for Rs.1000 /- (Indian delegates) or 100 USD (Foreign delegates) drawn in favor of “The Registrar, Annamalai University”, payable at Annamalainagar along with their abstract and registration form. Accommodation is Rs.200/-per day for students and Rs.300 /-per day for other Indian delegates and 50 USD for foreign delegates.
