The Department of Botany is one of the most oldest departments in the University. Eminent Scientists like Dr. A. Gnanam, Dr. K.M. Marimuthu, Dr. G. Kulandaivelu and Dr. M. Vivekanandan are the Alumni of the Botany Department. Department has been sponsored with UGC-SAP (Rs. 69 lakhs) and DST-FIST (Rs. 74.50 lakhs). The department is offering Botany and Herbal Science at M.Sc., M.Phil., and Ph.D levels. Response of plants to music was researched by a former Professor T.C.N. Singh who headed the Department during 1950s. Till date, 36 students have been awarded Ph.D. degree and 65 students are doing their Ph.D programmes in various frontier areas of plant science. Faculty members have published more than 350 research articles in various international journals of repute. The research papers have been cited by more than 1800 researchers. Research funds to a tune of 2.04 lakhs rupees have been received from DBT, DRDO, ICMR and UGC for undertaking various research projects.

 

Spacious well equipped laboratories viz., molecular biology, biotechnology, tissue culture, bioactive compound separation are available in the Department. Instruments like RT-PCR, PCRs, Gel Doc System, Refrigerated Centrifuge, CO2 Incubator are at the disposal of faculty, research scholars and students. A good Botanical Garden and Green House are available. A potential larvicidal molecule Methyl para benzoate has been isolated from Vitex sp. Bioreclamation of salt affected soil has been achieved by using halophytes. Research scholars of Botany Department are getting ICMR SRF, DST INSPIRE and UGC-BSR Fellowships.
