The Department of Electrical Engineering, established under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Annamalai University during the year 1945, is well known for providing quality technical education to the students from all over India and abroad through regular, part-time and distance education streams. The curriculum of all the courses are designed to cover a wide range of areas such as power generation, transmission and distribution, electric drives, biomedical, telecommunication networks, electrical machines, modern control systems, embedded systems, digital image processing, renewable energy systems, etc., besides providing equal emphasis on theory and practical lab sessions.  It aims to impart in-depth knowledge and equip the students for adapting themselves to meet the needs of the present day industries and the society, while upholding the professional ethics.


The Department comprises 144 highly qualified and experienced teaching faculties; many of them possess PhD degree and have proven record of meritorious accomplishments to their credit and 173 supporting staff.  It possess 19 well equipped laboratories that allow the students in learning the fundamental experiments and doing advanced research involving software packages MiPower, PSCAD, ETAP, MULTISIM, VSIM, PSIM and XILINX.


The Faculty of Engineering and Technology has bagged the UGC sponsored Obama –Singh 21st century knowledge initiative (OSI) award for three years from the year 2013. It has enabled the Department of Electrical Engineering to offer a two year on campus full time postgraduate programme in Smart Energy Systems from this academic year. Besides the award facilitates three to five post graduate students from Smart Energy system, Power System, Process Control & Instrumentation and Computer Science & Engineering to carry out their Phase–I /Phase–II thesis and credit two theory courses of their third semester of their program at Tennessee Technological University, USA on the guidelines of MoU reached between the two partners. It also endeavors the exchange of faculty from the Departments of Electrical, Electronics & Instrumentation and Computer Science & Engineering to promote interactive research in the area of energy system and address the risks and uncertainties of the Tamil Nadu energy environment.


The Department is supported by AICTE, UGC and MHRD, New Delhi through liberal funds for new laboratories and modernization of the existing laboratories.

The Department explores the modern trends and technological developments and provides an avenue of enriching the knowledge in the thrust areas of both the faculties and students, in coordination with Anna University, Central Power Research Institute and National Power Training Institute through conducting short-term programmes, work shops and national level conferences.  It offers consultancy service to Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd.


The Department conducts “ElectroSports”, an intradepartmental sports tournament and “Surge”, a students’ level technical symposium every year for promoting the students interest in sports and cultural activities and bringing out their knowledge in the emerging areas and technical skills through paper presentation and demonstration of their projects.


It conducts personality development and counseling classes to the students every week with a view of molding the students’ character in a right way.


The Department engages in social service activities such as training the youth of the Tsunami affected area in repair and maintenance of domestic appliances and house wiring.
