The department was established in 1988 on bifurcation from the parent Electrical engineering department. The department offers
          (i) B.E (Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering) - Full time & Part time
          (ii) M.E (Process control and Instrumentation) - Full time & Part time
          (iii) PhD in Instrumentation engineering - Full time & Part time

 

The department has the distinction of having established a national MEMS design centre with software grant of one crore from Government of India through National program on Micro and smart systems. The Department is a DST-FIST sponsored department as well as UGC SAP DRS assisted department with grants of 61 lakhs and 50 lakhs from DST and UGC respectively.15 scholars from our department have been awarded PhD and 5 scholars from Electrical and Electronics department have been awarded PhD under the guidance of teachers of our department. The department has also distinction of 90 PhD scholars working in state of art thrust areas like Process control, Instrumentation, Power electronics and control, MEMS, Biomedical engineering ,Measurement and instrumentation, Signal processing ,Digital image processing under the guidance of 18 research supervisors who have obtained their doctorate not only from our university but also from IITs, Anna University, PSG college technology. The Alumni of our department are distributed all over the globe as Hods in leading educational institutions in India and aboard, top bureaucrats and administrators in leading industrial houses like ABB, Yokogowa, Singapore telephones, INTEL, DRDO, ISRO, etc., and global organizations like world bank, Google., The department has strong industrial support and research collaboration with Vi micro system, Chennai based industrial house. The department has also the credit of hosting National system conference 2012 in our faculty which was given for the first time to a rural town like Chidambaram by system society of India.
