| FACULTY
OF MEDICINE - A SHORT HISTORY |
|
|
|
The Annamalai University is a unitary residential University imparting instruction in Post-Graduate and Professional Programmes in several disciplines, besides providing research programmes upto the Ph.D., D.Litt./D.Sc. levels. It was founded by the munificence of the farsighted, noble-hearted philanthropist and patron of letters, the Hon’ble Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad. He started several colleges, and ultimately, the University in 1929. Since its inception, the Annamalai University has progressively tried to realise the aims of its noble Founder Pro-Chancellor. After him, his illustrious son, Padma Bhushan Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad, was the Pro-Chancellor from 1948 to 1984, and he sedulously nurtured the growth and development of the University. The present Pro-Chancellor Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy, a philanthropist and patron of sports, is the distinguished son of Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar. The University has had the unique good fortune of having a succession of eminent Vice-Chancellors to guide its destinies. During the last 80 years, it has grown rapidly and has consolidated its position as a unitary and residential University with forty-nine Departments of Study and over 2360 members on its teaching staff. Annamalainagar is a busy and self contained University town, east of Chidambaram, the abode of Lord Nataraja. The University campus, including the colleges, hostels, and playgrounds, sprawls over an area of about one thousand acres. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has reaccredited the University at B++ (80 - 85) level.
Dr.
M.A.M. Ramaswamy, the present
Pro-Chancellor has, by his
dynamism and farsighted vision
as well as philanthropic outlook,
endeavoured to translate the
dreams of his father into
reality. As a result, the
Rajah Muthiah Medical College
was established on 5th August,
1985, on the Eighty-First
Birthday of his revered father
and a great visionary whose
name it bears. This is the
second phase of the development
of the Rajah Muthiah Institute
of Health Sciences, since
the Rajah Muthiah Dental College
was started in the first phase
in 1980.
In the initial stages, the institute was well nurtured by Dr. S.V. Chittibabu, the then Vice-Chancellor. It was then taken care of by the successive Vice-Chancellors. The previous Vice-Chancellors took a very keen interest in the all round growth and development of all Faculties including RMIHS and the University reached the zenith of its glory. Dr. M. Ramanathan, the then Dean Faculty of Medicine, took over as
Vice-Chancellor from Dr. L.B. Venkatrangan and with his experience in the
Faculty and the University, the University and the Faculty are poised for growth at a faster pace.
The
Rajah Muthiah Medical College
Hospital which is the teaching
hospital for Rajah Muthiah
Medical College serves the
needs of the surrounding villages
by providing medical treatment
with skilled doctors in the
well equipped hospital. Apart
from ensuring curative and
rehabilitative services through
the hospital, community services
on the preventive and promotive
sides are also being meaningfully
organised, keeping in view
the health needs of the rural
as well as the urban sectors
of the community. The Rajah
Muthiah Institute of Health
Sciences is designed to play
a dynamic role efficiently
and effectively implementing
the "Health for all by
2000 A.D." programme
as envisaged by the Government.

The
Rajah Muthiah Medical College
and Hospital are developing
rapidly under the benevolent
guidance and able leadership
of our Founder Pro-Chancellor,
Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy and the
successive Vice-Chancellors.
With the acquisition of a
C.T. Scan and Colour Doppler
in April 1998 a renal dialyser,
and a MRI recently the Rajah
Muthiah Medical College Hospital
has joined a select band of
sophisticated hospitals in
the country.
The
Academic tempo in the Rajah
Muthiah Medical College and
Hospital is maintained at
a high level by the activities
of the scientific body - Academy
of Medical Sciences. Under
the auspices of the Academy,
regular monthly meetings are
held, wherein research papers
and interesting hospital cases
are presented and discussed.
Symposia are held annually
on various medical topics.
Eminent scientists are invited
by the Academy to give guest
lectures on topics of current
importance. The University
has been hosting several National
Medical Conferences. The teachers
in the Faculty have presented
papers / participated in several
National Seminars / Conferences
/ Symposia.
The
imposing structures of the
Rajah Muthiah Institute of
Health Sciences with a built-in
area of 6,970 square metres
were built at a cost of several
crores of rupees and have
the distinction of having
been declared open by His
Excellency Rashtrapathi Shri
R. Venkataraman, the then
President of India, on 28.4.1988.
These house both the Medical
and the Dental Colleges. In
the first phase, a 450 bedded
hospital with facilities for
surgical operation, sophisticated
equipment and laboratory appliances
for providing effective in-patient
services was declared open
by His Excellency Dr. P.C.
Alexander, the then Governor
of Tamil Nadu and Chancellor
of the University.
In
the second phase, a spacious
OPD complex with more than
5,575 square metres area was
declared open by Dr. Lalitha
Kameswaran, the then Vice-Chancellor
of Tamilnadu M.G.R. Medical
University.
Now
a New Hospital Complex with
a total strength of 1210 beds
with 6,776.5 square metres
area with all basic services
and specialised good quality
services have been commissioned
to offer services to various
sections of beneficiaries
from Cuddalore and adjacent
Districts.
Four
new hostel blocks, two each
for men and women, have also
come into being for providing
comfortable accommodation
to the students. Besides,
there are separate quarters
- one each for men and women
CRRIs. A new Post-graduate
students hostel with 150 single
bath attached rooms, is available.
A new hostel for I MBBS/I
BDS Men students is under
construction opposite to the
Medical College Library. The
University has also provided
staff quarters besides playgrounds
and other amenities which
make the campus life comfortable
and stimulating both for teachers
and students.
A
special feature of Rajah Muthiah
Medical College is that it
is one of the very few Medical
Colleges in India directly
run by universities. As a
University Medical College
with a residential system,
there are ample opportunities
for healthy interaction and
learning from multi-disciplinary
facilities available in the
campus of the Annamalai University.
Situated in sylvan surroundings,
the University is in close
proximity to the famous pilgrim
centre of Chidambaram, with
Lord Nataraja as its presiding
Deity.
Rajah
Muthiah Medical College has
been granted permanent recognition
by the Medical Council of
India for 150 annual admissions
into the M.B.B.S. Programme.
It has also been granted permission
to run Postgraduate degree

| The
primary objective of the Medical
College is to make its own
worthy contribution to the
community with well trained
and properly equipped doctors
and paramedical personnel
such as Nurses and Physiotherapists.
Physiotherapy and Occupational
Therapy are paramedical components
of the relatively recent medical
speciality viz., Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Physiotherapy makes use of
various physical modalities
such as heat, light, sound,
electricity and magnetism
as well as scientifically
validated techniques of exercises,
traction and manipulation.
Occupational Therapy uses
standardised testing procedures
and evaluative methods to
organise goal directed activity
so that better functional
outcome is achieved. Together,
they contribute to the rehabilitation
of various musculoskeletal,
neurologic, pulmonary and
cardiac conditions. To keep
pace with the development
of modern medical education,
the programme of Bachelor
of Physiotherapy was started
from the academic year 1991-92.
Dr. T.C. Mohan, the then Vice-Chancellor,
had taken keen interest to
introduce this new and useful
programme. In 1994-1995 the
programme of Bachelor of Occupational
Therapy was started. Dr. M.G.
Muthukumaraswamy the then
Principal and Medical Superintendent,
Rajah Muthiah Medical College
and Hospital, took special
interest in the programme.
Dr. T.C. Mohan was succeeded
by Dr. M.G. Muthukumaraswamy
and Dr. P.V. Vaidyanathan.
The present Vice-Chancellor
Dr. L.B. Venkatrangan, a nationally
acclaimed demographer, is
taking a keen interest in
the development of the programmes.
From 1999-2000, a programme
leading to Master of Physiotherapy
was also introduced. |
Dr. N. Chidambaram is the Principal, Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Head of the Department of Medical Education and Dean, Faculty of Medicine.

They are ably assisted by many renowned teachers and clinicians who have vast experience in teaching from the various branches of Medicine. The Hospital at present has 1210 beds. The students have ample opportunity for clinical training in the out-patient department and the wards consisting of various specialities. There is a well-equipped Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation to give practical training to the students.
Dr.
P.G. Chandrasekaran Nair,
is the Head of the Department.
Formerly Dr. K. Janarthanam
was the H.O.D., and he was
responsible for establishing
the programmes and placing
them on a firm footing. An
Artificial Limp Centre was
established by Dr. U. Nandakumar
Nair.
This
Medical College is unique
in that, it is one of the
few, which has a separate
full-fledged division of Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation.
