Vision and Mission
The vision of Rani Meyyammai College of Nursing is to promote health and provide comprehensive and quality nursing care to the clients with health care needs in the hospital and community health care settings by preparing undergraduate and post graduate nursing students as Clinical Nurses, Nurse managers, Nurse practitioners, Nurse administrators, Nurse educators and Nurse researchers.
• Promote application of knowledge of students from physical, biological, behavioural sciences and
medicine including alternative systems and nursing in providing nursing care based on nursing
process to individuals, families and communities.
• Develop understanding among students about life style and other factors, which affect health of
individuals and foster critical thinking skills in making decisions in needed situations.
• Promote effective communication and interpersonal relationships with individuals and groups, and
members of the health team in the health care delivery system.
• Develop skill in teaching about health to the individuals and groups and also managerial and
leadership skills in the clinical/community health care settings.
• Promote the utilization of the latest trends, technology and evidence based research findings in
providing promotive, preventive, curative and restorative health services in line with the
national health policies and programmes.
• Contribute towards advancement of self and of the profession and practice nursing within the
framework of code of ethics and professional conduct and acceptable standards of practice within
Origin and Development of the College
The B.Sc. Nursing (4 Years) programme was started in the year 1983, in the Department of Nursing, under the Faculty of Medicine, Annamalai University. The Department of Nursing was renamed as Rani Meyyammai College of Nursing in the year 1995-96. The college is one of the largest in India, in terms of faculty, facilities and student strength as it has grown tremendously from the time of inception till date.
The M.Sc. Nursing programme was commenced due to high demands from the society in the academic year 2003-04 with the aim to prepare the candidates to function in various capacities like Nurse practitioners, Nurse educators, Nurse administrators and Nurse researchers. The M.Sc. Nursing programme has 5 branches, viz Medical Surgical Nursing, Paediatric Nursing, Obstetrics & Gynaecological Nursing, Community Health Nursing and Psychiatric (Mental) Nursing. The B.Sc & M.Sc Nursing programmes are recognized by the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council, Chennai and Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi. The revision of curricula is made from time to time following the guidelines of Indian Nursing Council. So far, 28 batches of B.Sc. Nursing and 15 batches of M.Sc. Nursing students have graduated from this college.
The part time Ph.D. Nursing programme for in-service candidates was started in the year 2002 and for external candidates, in the year 2006. Till date 59 Ph.D. candidates are awarded Ph.D. The Programme is recognized by UGC and various Universities have recognized the programme for the purpose of placement.
The M.Sc Nursing programme was commenced from the academic year2003-04 with the aim to prepare the candidates to function as leaders in different settings like Nurse practitioner, Nurse educator, Nurse administrator and Nurse researcher.
Uniqueness of Rani Meyyammai College of Nursing
The college is situated in the University campus. The college is functioning in a separate building from 2007 onwards and has a separate budget. The college has, Dr. Mrs. M.Gandhimathi as Principal and Dr. Mrs. S.Kamala as Vice principal, and two Professors, two Readers, sixteen lecturers and thirty tutors with a total of 52 teaching staff (as per INC norms) and 21 non teaching staff. Twenty Faculty members are qualified with Ph.D. The Principal is the Chairman of Board of studies & Board of Examinations.
The college has a separate building with a total built area of 76668sq.ft. It has spacious four UG class rooms and six PG class rooms and six nursing laboratories with essential equipments. The department has a separate nursing library with 6290 books and regularly subscribed Indian & Foreign Journals. Also, e-journals and e-books in ample numbers is accessible to students in the e-library of the college. A spacious auditorium (6000sq.ft) with 600 seating capacity is available for students programmes.
The college of Nursing utilizes the staff and facilities available at Rajah Muthiah Medical College and the Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital which is a 1150 bedded hospital having 24 patient care units, situated opposite to the college which gives a rich experience for the practical learning of students. Students have adequate transportation and community centre facilities to care people in the rural and urban area.
All the students are members of Students Nurses Association (SNA) and the students participate in various inter-collegiate competitions and at state and national level. Students actively participate in YRC, NSS, Rotary Club activities and in University competitions and students performing academically best are awarded endowment prizes. Separate Hostel named Tmt. Sigappi Achi Nursing Students Hostel is situated near to the college and it has bath attached rooms, separate mess and 24 hours electricity, R.O water supply and Wi-Fi network.
- Alumni of RMCON are working in almost all countries, as principals, professors, associate professors, assistant professor and administrators and clinical nurses in many of the nursing colleges, hospitals and community health care settings. Many students are working in various positions all over the world such as U.S, U.K., Nigeria, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai, Australia, UAE, Oman, Yemen, Libya and Newzeland.
• Mrs.Geetha received Best nurse award (2012) from the President of India.
• Mrs.Deivi is working as Acting Dean, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Jaffna, Sri
Lanka since December 2019.
