The Department of Chemical Engineering, a DST –FIST sponsored department, was started in the year 1945. It was the second college to offer an undergraduate programme in Chemical Engineering in Tamilnadu. Prof.M.L.Joshi, Dr.K.C.Gulati, Dr.P.U.Pai, Prof.B.NarayanaDas, Prof.N.P.Palaniappan, Dr.S.M.Lakshmanan, Dr.AN.Andiappan, Dr.PL.Sabarathinam, Dr.N.Sitaraman, Prof.T.Karuppiah Prof.K.Vaidhiyanathan and Dr.T.Viruthagiri are the eminent scholars in the field of Chemical Engineering who had headed the department.
At present the department is headed by Dr.P.Kanthabhabha with 8 Professors, 8 Associate Professors and 41 Assistant Professors. The department is very popular for its teaching of Chemical Engineering principles and all the Chemical Engineering Laboratories are well equipped with most modern equipment. The department has expertise in Chemical Reaction Engineering, Process Modelling, Simulation and Control, Simultaneous Heat and Mass Transfer, Thermodynamics, Bioprocess Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Enzyme Engineering and Environmental Engineering and offering consultancies to various leading industries in the design of chemical processes and in trouble shooting operations. It has about 50 trained technical and administrative staff.
The department, apart from its Bachelor’s and the Master’s programme in Chemical Engineering, offers M.Tech programmes in Food Processing Technology, Industrial Biotechnology and Industrial Safety Engineering which attracts students from other disciplines of Engineering and Life Sciences. Two programmes namely, M.Tech Industrial Safety Engineering and M.Tech Food Processing Technology have bagged a funding of Rs. 50 Lakhs each under Innovative Programme Scheme from U.G.C. The department has produced the first PhD in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, has produced 58 PhD so far and has 46 ongoing PhD. The department supports four inter disciplinary programmes run by other Departments of the Faculty of Science. The department offers 12 programmes through Distance Education and. It has organized several industry oriented refresher courses, seminars, workshops and conferences. The 63rd Annual Session of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, The INDIAN CHEMICAL ENGINEERING CONGRESS “CHEMCON–2010” and SCHEMCON-2007 were jointly organized by the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, Annamalai-Neyveli Regional Centre and the Department of Chemical Engineering, Annamalai University, Annamalainagar. It has an excellent industrial tie up with neighbouring industries in SIPCOT Cuddalore, NLC, Neyveli and industries in Karaikkal.
There are 17 endowment / scholarships available for our students. Reputed companies like Dow Chemicals Company, ESSAR Limited, Vedanta-Sterlite, Gharda Chemicals, SPIC, Tamilnadu Petro Products and Shasun Chemicals have recruited our students on- campus. The department boasts an unparalleled support which it enjoys from its Alumni, who are occupying very high positions in India and abroad in leading Educational institutions and Industries and have made wonderful achievements.
