MYAS – AU DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS SCIENCES

         The MYAS-AU Department of Sports Sciences, Centre of Excellence was established in Annamalai University with the support of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), Government of India during 2018. This department is offering specialized Certificate, Bachelor, Master’s and Ph.D. degree programmes in the core areas of sports sciences, aimed at improving sports assessment and research to International standard. Qualified and specialized faculty and well-equipped labs along with a comprehensive learning environment offered will provide the students a perfect atmosphere to excel in this emerging area with unlimited opportunities. The Department of Sports Sciences is having sports science laboratory of International standard in the specialized areas like exercise physiology, sports biomechanics, sports physiotherapy, sports anthropometry and sports training, which will provide the opportunity to support athletes in optimizing their sports performance to higher level. The department is to function in association with stakeholders like Sports Authority of India, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT), Sports Federations and Educational Institutions by facilitating the integration of sports science services on the field. Practical exposures to students in the state of the art in sports science laboratories and on field exposure would keep abreast with current developments in areas of sports sciences.

Mission
         The fundamental mission is to producesports specialists and trainers who have the basic knowledge in their respective specialised areas, the interaction between health and sports, the psychological and social aspect of sports as well as the scientific basis for sports and physical activity and creating a comprehensive learning environment to provide the students a perfect atmosphere to excel in this emerging area with unlimited opportunities. The program also aims to bring up qualified sports professionals who will achieve scientific and sports-related success at the national and international level with the help of their professional and moral ethics, research and communication skills.
Genesis
         During the academic year 2018-19, the establishment of the MYAS-AU Department of Sports Sciences, Centre of Excellence, added a new feather on the cap of Annamalai University, with the financial support of 25 Crore from The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS), Government of India. This unique department is one among the six beneficiary University/Departments in India, and, one and only institution with exemplary infrastructure and research departments to coordinate the academic and research activities pertaining to sports sciences in South India. This initiative by the Government of India meant to foster innovation and sports research with a view of helping elite athletes perform better in competitions and promoting participation in sports.
History
         The MYAS-AU Department of Sports Sciences, existed on 08th May 2018, headed by Professor Dr. R. L. SudhanPaulraj as the Director, initially functioned under the faculty of Education then shifted under the Faculty of Science. The Department of Sports sciences augmented with six major divisions as Division of Exercise Physiology and Sports Biochemistry, Division of Strength&Conditioning and Sports Nutrition, Division of Sports Biomechanics, Division of Sports Psychology, Division of Sports Physiotherapy and Division of Sports Science and Anthropometry. Dr. M.A. Hassan Professor, Dr. K. Sreedhar Professor, Dr. R. Muthu Eleckuvan Associate Professor, Dr. B. Chittibabu Associate Professor, Dr. M. Elamaran, Associate Professor and Mr. P. Sudhesh, Lecturer in Physiotherapy were appointed as faculties also given the head ship of various divisions.
Major achievements
  • The international Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) Level-1 certificate course was conducted in the year 2018-19 and it is            proposed to conduct the same Level-1 and Level-2 every year.
  • Mr. NasarudheenK.K.Second MPT Sports Physiotherapy student attended the Santhosh Trophy Football camp representingTamil Nadu state at            Tanjavur SDAT Stadium in the year 2019 – 2020.
  • Mr. Nasarudheen K.K.Second MPT Sports Physiotherapy student represented Annamalai University Football team in theTamil Nadu Inter University            FootballTournament at Sathyabama University, Chennai in the year 2018 – 2019.
  • Mr. VivekV. Second M.Sc Sports Biomechanics student represented Annamalai University Handball team in the SDAT Tamil Nadu Inter University            Handball Tournament 2019-2020 at Periyar University, Salem
  • Ms. C. Atchaya,First BSc Sports Sciences student represented Annamalai University Handball team in the SDAT Tamil Nadu State Inter University          Women Handball Tournament 2019 - 2020 held at Periyar University, Salem
  • Contributions
              As a part of internship our second year MPT Sports Physiotherapy students assisting and helping on field sports injury management at Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, SDAT sports stadium once in a week also whenever they need the service and also emphasize to create a healthy and strong society through exercise.
